A Summer's Day in Kirkland

Washington’s summer months are special. The sun comes out to play, providing residents and visitors with the ideal weather for exploration and relaxation. Kirkland’s wide range of activities makes it the ultimate lakefront destination to enjoy a long summer day.

Whether you’re a local looking for some inspiration or a traveler wanting to experience the Pacific Northwest’s sunny season, Kirkland invites you to indulge yourself and explore this magnificent city. Grab your sunglasses—you’re going to need them!

Wake up with a morning walk (Coffee Included)

Rolling out of bed has never been nicer. As the birds chirp outside your guestroom and the sunbeams poke through the shutters, Kirkland’s wake-up call wastes no time!

Begin your adventure at Marina Park, located downtown. This iconic park features a sandy beach, a beautiful open-air pavilion, and magnificent views of Lake Washington and Seattle. On a summer’s day, the waterfront serves as a swimming ground for families and the perfect place to get your toes wet.

From the park, set off on foot for a 30-minute walk to Carillon Point, a beautiful marina and boutique shopping center. Enjoy water views the whole way as you stroll down Lake Street. Along the route, you will pass multiple smaller parks and lake-access points, including David Brink Park, with a viewing platform extending into the water, and Houghton Beach Park, with public volleyball courts. Reward yourself when you reach your destination with an iced coffee from Beach House Bar + Grill.

Looking for more park fun or want to grab the kids and explore Kirkland’s great outdoors? Consult the Online Parks Guide for a full list of parks and their amenities.

Brunch Time!

Getting a little hungry after that long walk? Kirkland has you covered, with restaurants galore! The one-of-a-kind diners and homey cafés scattered around town will be sure to please.

A local hot spot, George's provides a combination of great food with friendly service and has been a part of the Kirkland community since 1976. Its classic comfort foods with a twist include smoked salmon benedict and the farmer’s omelet, and of course, you can enjoy a delicious Bloody Mary.

If you are looking for a quick bite to go, stop by The French Bakery for their well-known daily freshly baked pastries or check-out one of Kirkland’s many coffee bars for a classic bagel with cream cheese.

Did you lose track of time during an intense volleyball game this morning? Maybe it’s time to skip straight to lunch at DERU Market for its unique rosemary cream wood-fired pizza—yum!

Nothing Says Summer Like the Market

Experience the tastes, smells, sounds, and sights of Kirkland all in one place with a visit to the Wednesday Market. The collection of locally grown produce, artisanal crafts, and freshly picked flowers will keep you entertained for hours!

Discover something new with the family, or go on a solo adventure and immerse yourself in this vibrant community event, every Wednesday from June through September.

Explore the Outdoors by Land or Water

If you are looking for some more outdoor fun in the sun, rent a stand-up paddleboard from Northwest Paddle Surfers. Vast Lake Washington can seem never-ending, so there’s plenty of space to splash around!

If a drier adventure is more your style, take a stroll through Juanita Bay Park and challenge yourself to find as many bird species as possible. The urban park is a bird-watching paradise, home to unique Pacific Northwest species, including the great blue heron and belted kingfisher. Listen to chirps from all the trees and play a game of "I-Spy" with the family.

Get Your Grub On!

After a long day of exploration, you deserve a drink! Sit in the outdoor dining area at Cactus for a delicious Mexican meal paired with the best mojito in town. The Southwest-inspired menu offers tapas (small plates for sharing) just right for a gathering with friends or family.

Being close to the water may also increase your seafood cravings, in which case Anthony’s, Big Fish Grill or Spud Fish & Chips would be perfect for you! These restaurants offer a range of seafood fare, all with a uniquely Pacific Northwest twist.

Music and Celebration in the Park

Located on Lake Washington, Kirkland’s waterfront parks offer dramatic sunsets daily, along with views of the Seattle skyline and the Olympic Mountains. Take in the romantic view or experience a lively community event at several scenic parks.

If you are visiting around the Fourth of July, it is impossible to miss the festivities occurring all day long! The beloved Old-Fashioned Downtown Parade starts at noon, beginning at Lakeshore Plaza and winding its way through the streets, spreading cheer to all as it passes. After the parade, gather with friends and family at Marina Park for a community picnic, local vendors, live music and a massive fireworks show at 10:00 p.m.

End the Day with a Friendly Game of Indoor Golf

A Washington favorite, Flatstick Pub combines mini-golf with craft beers for an experience you’ll never forget! Come test your putting skills on the nine-hole course, including obstacles such as water hazards and secret tunnels, all while enjoying the 27 brews on tap. If you’re bringing the kids along, no worries: all ages are welcome before 7:00 p.m.

Bring Your Boat—Kirkland Is a Boater’s Paradise

No other location on Lake Washington has more moorage space than Kirkland. With Marina Park, South Dock, and Carillon Point, the city offers more than 90 uncovered moorage slips year-round. Not only does Kirkland have the most moorage space, but Marina Park and South Dock offer your first three hours for free, and they are within walking distance to shops and restaurants. This is ideal for day-trippers who can make the most out of a quick jaunt on the water.
